Several different faults can look similar
A damp wall beside a shower does not establish whether the source is the concealed supply, waste connection, enclosure seal or waterproofing beneath the finish. The remedy depends on that distinction. Replacing a surface seal will not resolve a hidden pipe joint, while opening a wall for a pipe repair may miss a use-related surface pathway.
Record when moisture appears
Tell the engineer whether water is present even when the shower is unused, appears during use or arrives in a room below after a delay. A pattern across several observations is more useful than a single wet patch. Include any recent resealing, tray movement or refurbishment without assuming those details prove the cause.
A planned test asks a specific question
An investigation may compare moisture patterns, inspect accessible connections and use controlled checks suited to the suspected route. A borescope can sometimes add a view into an accessible void. Dye is only appropriate in suitable circumstances and is not a universal way to test every hidden pipe or finished surface.
Understand the access before the repair
If evidence supports a concealed plumbing fault, the engineer explains the opening needed to confirm and repair it. The agreed residential package includes necessary plumbing access and repair, but retiling or rebuilding a waterproofing system is separate. This avoids confusing a repair to the source with the work needed to restore the shower finish.
Keep a record that explains the outcome
An Written Trace & Access report records the relevant findings and work, with supporting photographs where appropriate. It helps an owner or insurer understand which source was established and what was repaired. Whether those costs are covered still depends on the policy, approval requirements and the insurer’s assessment.
